Photography Tour, Focus On Birds

This photo expedition has been designed for avid and casual bird and wildlife photography enthusiasts visiting Costa Rica.

Names of the Main Habitats that we will visit:

  • Paramo habitat over forests (Cerro de la Muerte)
  • Highland Oak Forest (Savegre)
  • Rainforest on the foothills of the Caribbean slope (Turrialba Valley)
  • Tropical Dry Forest (Northwest)
  • Pacific lowlands (Carara National Park)
  • Mangrove (Tarcoles River)
  • Coastline (Golfo de Nicoya, Pacific Coast)

Items included in the price:

Private transportation between lodges

Airport pick-up -> Hotel Bougainvillea -> Savegre Mountain Lodge -> Rancho Naturalista -> Selva Verde Lodge -> Punta Leona OR Villa Lapas -> Hotel Bougainvillea -> Airport drop-off

Price includes:

  • All lodging
  • All meals except arrival dinner and dinner the night before departure at Hotel Bougainvillea
  • All taxes on meals and lodging
  • Full-day guided tour to La Selva OTS Station while at Selva Verde including transport
  • Boat trip on the Tarcol River while staying in the Carara area including roundtrip transport from the lodge

Optional extras:

  • Private transport from and to the airport and between lodges; the total is divided by the number of guests
  • Entrance fees to places not mentioned in the basic plan
  • Private Bird Guide at each location or throughout your trip if available

Trip Gear and Clothing:

Binoculars are always recommended on all wildlife tours and this one is not an exception.

You are coming to a Rainforest, though you may need simple tools, but useful:

  • Cameras of your choice are required in all wildlife photo tours
  • Any camera gear; extra lenses, extenders, Filters, battery chargers, tripod if you like it, Camera straps, Light kit
  • Rain cover for the camera and lens
  • Flashes of preference (some places do not allow flash), Reflectors, or even Studio backdrop, (Please take into consideration the weight of the suitcases)
  • A good raincoat or waterproof rain gear always makes a big difference when an unexpected shower comes through (you may not have experienced it)
  • You should bring an umbrella instead of a raincoat, it can get too hot
  • Short and long sleeve shirts, we also recommend bringing long & short pants, all these items lightweight and comfortable
  • Lightweight jacket, hopefully, synthetic material, and a heavier fleece for cool weather
  • A good hat that can offer protection from the sun
  • Walking or hiking shoes and sandals or flip flops
  • Bottle for water or “hydration pack” such as Camelback
  • Prescription glasses and sunglasses with a strap if you prefer

  • Prescription medicines you may need during the trip
  • Personal toilet articles
  • Casual clothing, such as jeans and sleepwear

  • 1 night: San Jose upon arrival at Hotel Bougainvillea.
  • 3 nights: Savegre Mountain Lodge in Chiriqui Highlands
  • 3 nights: Rancho Naturalista on the Caribbean slope.
  • 3 nights: Selva Verde Lodge in the Caribbean lowlands.
  • 3 nights: Punta Leona or Villa Lapas near Carara in the Pacific lowlands.
  • 1 nights: San Jose before departure at Hotel Bougainvillea.

The photo expedition focuses on producing unique bird and wildlife images while sharpening your photographic mindset and skill in the tropical rainforest of Costa Rica. This country is a very good option to diversify your photographic production of wildlife since you can take photographs of birds, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and a wide variety of insects on the same tour.

The tour is completely customizable to your needs, for us the most important thing is to be able to help you obtain that image you want of those icons of tropical rainforest creatures like Toucans, Parakeets, Parrots, Resplendent Quetzals, Volcano Hummingbird among other hummers, Scarlet Macaw, Pygmy-Owl, Roseate Spoonbill, Common Black Hawk, Yellow-headed Caracara just to mention some.
